PERSONAL LEADERSHIP
We all begin life guided by the views, beliefs, experiences, expectations and advice of others. However, as we grow physically, emotionally, spiritually, mentally, financially and socially, we begin to create our own belief systems, which may sometimes be or not be in line with societal expectations.
According to Sigmund Freud’s model of the Psyche (Id, Ego and Superego), we begin to form our complete personality in order to be self-reliant. It is of paramount importance for us to make our own decisions about what we believe, what our convictions are, and what we value in life. The system of the world has taught us to act primarily on the viewpoints and sentiments of others, which make us slowly, lose our voice.
For instance, the companies we work for, the social clubs we are part of, and the organizations we associate with have firm values. We therefore work so hard to try to live out their values yet we ourselves do not have personal values that we live by. Are we being serious?
What are your values as a person? What do you stand for? If any of your friends would be asked to mention one thing that you stand for, or one thing that you value what would it be?. Values define us, they stand as internal motivation and pillars in our lives, they give us direction on the way to go and which way not to. You cannot become an exceptional and intentional leader if you are unable to lead yourself. Leadership begins with self; any person with strong values will always be firm in their decision-making. They cannot easily be swayed by any wind that blows their way. Your values will lead you towards your mission and vision statement in life.
I encourage you to take some time off your busy schedule and think about your life. Do you think you are leading yourself in the right direction? Think about your values and jot them down, then share them out with your friends, siblings or workmates. This way, you will find yourself practicing your values until they become tangible and in return, you will become an exceptional leader to self and others.
