BALCONY MOMENTS
The ultimate responsibility for success or failure in your life lays entirely on you as an individual. That is why you always need to be healthy mentally, emotionally and physically to be of help to self and others.
John, (not his real name) my friend, suffered from being a perfectionist years back. He is a very good organizer and has a second, third and fourth eye at it. He also pays close attention to details. Just like many good organizers, John suffered from a disease called “inability to delegate”.
One day, his system shut down and he had to be confined to his house for a period of two months. The doctors advised bed and mind rest. You can imagine how hard this was for a workaholic!
During one of my visits at his residence, he kept venting and cursing. I politely recommended and I quote,
“John you need to consider having a balcony moment”.
“Balcony Moment?” he repeated. “What’s that?”
I explained what I meant and he retorted that those things do not work and told me to forget about it. Well, I did.
Six months down the line, I met John at a function in which he was the main organizer. I was surprised to see him seated the entire time, as this was not his norm! He then whispered into my ears and said “balcony moments” – they have worked!
The need for “periodic balcony moments” is gradually increasing. We live in a fast moving world and if we are not careful, we can easily be swayed by the wind that blows our direction and lose focus, our main area of concern may defer but the denominator remains constant.
In our personal life, we need to take time to reflect authentically on our past, present and future. There is need to periodically step back from the crowd, get perspective, withdraw from work, family, friends, acquaintances, get recharged, reenergize, get new ideas, learn, unlearn, change the narrative of our routine and come back with the right energy to move our life forward.
Are you feeling low, fatigued, overwhelmed or empty inside? I encourage you to have a balcony moment. (The Me, Myself and I) moment is crucial at this stage of your life. You hold the power of decision making in your life; do not give it to anyone, any feeling or thought. Pull aside, restructure, rethink and get back on your feet.
