THE UNCERTAINTY OF PURPOSE
In the year 2012 around the month of November, out of excitement I innocently shared with a friend of mine part of what I felt my purpose was. I hold fast to the school of thought that believes in purpose and this is birthed out of my personal experience that purpose is not often well defined at heart or mind in the initial stages of life. I believe that no one fully knows what their purpose is, as it often unfolds when you begin working on it and becomes clearer progressively.
I remember that day vividly my friend said and I quote, “You don’t look like it, you cannot do it, you’re not even able to speak before an audience, how will this happen?”. This was a slap on my face for being so naive and silly to speak about a journey of my life that I knew nothing about but felt so strongly that I would one day pursue it. As anyone would, I concurred with her sentiments because she had a point in her statement. At that time, I could not even speak to an audience of one and put my message across clearly. I was everything she mentioned that time!
True to her words, there was no way I could become a speaker, let alone the other BIG words I mentioned. I then decided to shelve the idea of fulfilling purpose and kept myself busy with anything I came across.
In the uncertainty of finding purpose you will be rejected, abused, discouraged, disappointed, depressed, laughed at, envied and misunderstood.
Once you begin working on it, people will doubt what you do and what you believe you are gifted at. People will try to hold you back and tell you that you are moving too fast; you will come across people who will give you statistics of people who began and never accomplished.
You will definitely doubt yourself several times. People will keep watching from a distance to see how far you will go. Funding will be hard to find, but as you keep at it, you will attract the right people. The same people who were discouraging you to your surprise will be the same people who will buy into your vision over time!
Humanity is looking for solutions to their problems. If you are able to solve one of their problems, you will in due time build a huge following and there is nothing as satisfactory as fulfilling purpose. Don’t give up; don’t hold grudges. Go through the process, look up to God, smile on your way to greatness and never lose focus. The same friend who discouraged me in 2012 is the same friend God used to introduce me to the Corporate World on my first professional speaking engagement.
